Senior General Than Shwe inspects site of
Sittoung Bridge (Mopalin), tasks of Kataik Dam Project in Mon
State
YANGON, 6 Jan — Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than
Shwe, accompanied by Members of the State Peace and Development
Council General Thura Shwe Mann, Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint
Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Soe
Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Myat Hein, the ministers,
senior military officers and officials of the State Peace and
Development Council Office, left here by car for Mon State at 8.15
am on 4 January.
At 10 am, the Senior General and party arrived at the briefing
hall of Sittoung Bridge (Mopalin) construction project of Public
Works near Sittoung model village in Kyaikto Township.
Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo,
Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of
South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung, Chairman of Bago
Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern
Command Maj-Gen Ko Ko, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun,
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials welcomed the
Senior General and party.
First, Senior General Than Shwe viewed the plot for construction
of the bridge, Sittoung River and its environs.
Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on geographical
condition of the plot for the bridge, functions and facts about
the bridge. Managing Director U Han Zaw of Public Works reported
on endurance of the bridges.
Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Minister for Energy
Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen Aung
Min and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U
Soe Tha gave supplementary reports.
After hearing the reports, Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance
on arrangements to be made for construction of the bridge so as to
have safe endurance for transportation of loaded-vehicles which
carry gravel and cement and timely completion of the tasks.
Sittoung Bridge (Mopalin) will be built at a distance of four
miles downstream of the Sittoung Bridge. The new one will have 28
feet wide motor road.
The present Sittoung Bridge is an old one. In addition, the motor
road was built on the beams protruding from the main bridge. As
the bridge is no longer suitable for the loaded-vehicles,
arrangements are being made for construction of a new one.
The upper structure of the Sittoung Bridge (Mokpalin) will be of
steel frame and the lower, of reinforced concrete piles. The main
bridge will be 1,365 feet long and the whole bridge will be
2,392.7 feet in length.
At 3.15 pm, the Senior General and party proceeded to the site of
Kataik Dam Project being implemented by Construction-6 of
Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and
Irrigation, on Kataik Creek, two miles from Kataik Village of
Paung Township.
They were welcomed there by Minister for Agriculture and
Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo and officials.
In the briefing hall, Minister Maj-Gen Htay Oo briefed the Senior
General and party on the location of the dam, progress of works
and its benefited area.
Lt-Gen Maung Bo reported on annual rain- fall of Mon State
including Paung Township, and Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi,
on supply of fuel for the project.
In response, Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on timely
completion of the tasks with might and main and feasibility study
on water sources to be conducted for irrigation facilities.
Next, the Senior General and party oversaw progress of Kataik Dam
project.
The dam, 5,200 feet long and 134 feet high, will be an earth one.
The dam can store 56,000 acre-feet of water. On completion, the
dam can irrigate 10,000 acres of farmland.
After viewing the tasks at the dam project, Senior General Than
Shwe and party left for Mawlamyine by car over Thanlwin Bridge
(Maw-lamyine).

Yangon West District holds mass rally to honour Union Day, support
National Convention
YANGON, 6 Feb—Yangon West District held a mass rally to honour the
Union Day and support the National Convention in Sethsan Village,
Kyimyindine Township, Yagon Division, this morning.
Present on the occasion were Secretaries, Joint Secretaries and
members of USDAs from the district, townships and villages,
members of War Veterans Organization and members of social
organizations, Women Affairs Committee, Red Cross and Auxiliary
Fire Brigades and local people numbering over 5,000.
Yangon West District USDA Secretary U Tin Win presided over the
meeting together with Kyimyindine Township WVO Secretary U Ye Din,
District Maternal and Child Welfare Association Secretary Daw Tin
Nwe Oo, District Women’s Affairs Committee Treasurer Daw Ohn Myint
and townselder U Tin Nyunt.
Hline Township USDA Executive Daw Myintzu Than acted as MC while
Kyimyindine Township USDA Executive Daw Zin Zin Myo Tun acted as
co-MC.
When the presiding chairman announced the rally open those present
saluted the State Flag.
Ahlon Township USDA Executive Daw Pyon Pyon Maw presented matters
on honouring the Union Day, Lamadaw Township USDA Executive Daw
Kay Min Kahlar on supporting the National Convention and
Kyimyindine Township USDA Secretary U Myint Lwin on regional
development tasks in the district.
Yangon West District USDA Executive U Myint Hsaung seconded three
motions tabled by three representatives.
Next, documents on tasks carried out in the district, documents on
education, documentary on health and K 10 million for rural
development tasks were presented.
All those present on the occasion unanimously approved the motion
hailing the Union Day and supporting the National Convention and
rural development tasks.
The meeting ended with the chanting of the slogans.
